George Town
Located in the northeast part of the island, George Town is the capital of the state Penang in Malaysia. It is named after Britain’s King George III. Other names for the city are Tanjung ("The Cape") in Malay and Qiáozhì Shì in Chinese. Since 2008, the inner city of George Town is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Beautiful colonial-era shop houses in narrow streets offer traditional goods and food. Former administration buildings have been renovated and are used as museums, art galleries or hotels.
George Town is definitely the busiest place in Penang. If making friends with people from all over the world in one of the small bars in old shop houses or going shopping in a modern shopping mall, in George Town almost everything is possible and located in walking distance to each other. |
Batu Feringgi
Batu Feringgi is located in the northern part of Penang and is dominated by white, sandy beaches at a beautiful coast area. Large hotels, restaurants and souvenir stores for tourists make this area to one of the most demanded spots in Penang. Just enjoy the day at the beach, have dinner in one of the excellent seafood restaurant and finish the day with a good bargain at the famous night market. |
Tanjong Bungah
Hidden among lush greenery and rocky landscapes, Tanjong Bunga contains one of the suburbs of George Town as well as quiet places along the coast. It gives the opportunity to explore a less-touristic area of Penang. However, there is no reason to be bored or hungry. Have fun at one of the beautiful beaches and enjoy delicious food at the hawker stalls along the streets. |
Teluk Bahang
A fishing village located in the north-western part of Penang and surrounded by the national park is known as Teluk Bahang. Aside of the wild national park and the monkey beach, the Teluk Bahang Dam is located in this area. Just next to the Teluk Bahang village the Mutiara Beach Resort is situated. A further attraction is the Penang Butterfly Farm, which hosts a variety of 120 species of Butterflies. |
Air Itam
The town Air Itam, which means “black water” in Bahasa Malaysia, hosts the Penang Hill train station as the entrance gate for a stunning view over George Town. Located in the centre of Penang, also the famous Kek Lok Si Temple and the State Mosque (Masjid Negeri) can be found here. The area is famous for its Laksa food; the most delicious one can be enjoyed at the junction of Kek Lok Si Temple. |
