Explore Jerejak’s Nature
The island is covered in Dipterocarp forest, with Mangrove swamps in the estuaries and in places along the coastline. Home to 39 species of wildlife, the island’s nature can be explored along the walking and biking trails as well as through a guided jungle trek.
Dipterocarpaceae is a family of tree species found all over tropical regions, growing to heights of between 40 and 70 metres. These trees form the emergent and main canopy strata of the rainforest and are an impressive sight to behold.
Mangrove trees have specialised roots that enable them to grow in the salty mud banks of wetlands and the shores of rainforest areas and also give them the appearance of standing on stilts in the water. These trees not only play a vital role in keeping the soil from being washed away, but are the backbone of entire ecosystems that exist in these habitats.
White Bellied Sea Eagles, Long Tailed Macaques and Monitor Lizards are some of the species that can be found roaming the island, so keep a sharp lookout.
