Snorkelling and island hopping
The reefs around Besar Island are beautiful and there is plenty of colourful tropical marine life to see. One of the area’s biggest attractions is the prolific occurrence of the giant cockle: a massive species of clam that grows up to one and a half metres in length and can weigh up to 70kg. Sea turtles, moray eels, sting rays and countless species of coral and fish also make their home in these waters. Around Besar there are several other islands, all of which are have protected marine park status and most of which are uninhabited. The waters around these islands are filled with prolific marine life and the resorts can arrange for a day-long island-hopping and snorkelling trip including several stops. Islands that you may visit include Pulau Harimau, Pulau Mensirip, Pulau Rawa, Pulau Tengah and Pulau Hujung.
Other activities
Whether you prefer jungle, beach or sea, you will be able to keep yourself busy on Besar. While there may be no more wild boars on the island, the jungle still teems with life and a variety of species of plants. Jungle trekking, whether by yourself or with a guide, is a great activity for nature lovers. Remember to bring insect repellent! Playing a game of beach volleyball is an ideal activity on the perfect beaches of Besar. All the resorts on the island have a net on the beach and a ball to play with – all you need is two teams.

To explore the water around the island, rent a sea kayak and start paddling. Do watch out for strong currents and choppy seas, especially in the months closer to the monsoon season.
