Mersing

Mersing located east cost of Johor is a small and quiet fisherman town and a staging point to the Johor island and Tioman's island. The built up area is about 2838.6 sq km with the population of 67,557. Mersing is accurately dubbed as the paradise island for many beautiful and untouched islands within its boundary. From the jetty, tourist will be able to go to Rawa, Besar, Pemanggil, Dayang and Aur Island.  Some only within half an hour boat ride from the jetty, while others like Pemanggil and Aur require 4 to 5 hours boat ride. It is certainly the easiest access to Tioman Island (the other access point to Tioman island is via Tanjung Gemok jetty, Kuantan, Pahang). Speed ferry and speedboat trips to Tioman are available daily from Mersing's jetty.

Besides islands, Mersing's coastline is lined with several idyllic beaches that could provide equally exciting experience like Air papan, Penyabong beach, Teluk Buih Beach and Tenglu beach.

The Endau Rompin national Park is also accessible via Mersing. The national park hosted many flora and fauna, legendary waterfall, beautiful rock formation and number of interesting animal species. The park (about 48,905 hectar) located at the north east of Mersing at the border of Pahang's state.

There are only about 5 hotels in Mersing which 3 of them are budget type hotel (Embassy hotel, Mersing Inn and Mersing riverview hotel). The hotel rates are in the range of RM60-RM100 per night. The 2 star hotel, the Sri Malaysia and Hotel Timotel are in the range of RM80-RM150 per night.

picture of Mersing's jettyWhen you arrive in Mersing by coach, you will stop at plaza R&R which is within walking distance to the jetty.  Getting around in a taxi can cost you around RM5/trip.

Beware with an unauthorized travel agent who will try to persuade you to buy a travel package or ferry ticket because you might get cheated. There are many incident when the tourist bought a ferry ticket from unauthorized agent and end up with hours of waiting for the ferry which do not exists! The same thing goes to the buying holiday packages. Well, when someone approach you to sell the ticket of travel package, just tell them politely that you have already make your travel arrangements so that they will go away :). The best way is to go to a license travel agent (license by the Ministry of Tourism, Arts and Culture of Malaysia) and buy your holiday package.
