The tiny island is a green speck in the open Sulu Sea. Lush tropical greenery is fringed by palm trees and an untouched powdery white beach. Crystal clear turquoise water gently laps at the shore and the horizon is flushed in red as a sunny day gives way to a balmy evening.
This slice of heaven is not from a television studio – it’s all nature’s work. Lankayan is such a picture-perfect tropical island paradise that it seems almost unreal.
The Lankayan Island Dive Resort offers the only accommodation on this remote, uninhabited island. A handful of elegant wooden chalets are lined along the water’s edge and hammocks are tied between palm trees. Flavourful meals are served on the restaurants deck, jutting out over the shimmering water.
Under the surface, marine treasures of all kinds wait to be discovered. Macro subjects abound in the shallower water and the reefs and wrecks are home to numerous species of colourful coral, fish and turtles. The highlight for every diver is the chance to spot whale sharks, the gentle giants that visit Lankayan once a year between March and May.
